Energy to make energy
It takes a variety of energy sources and materials to turn crude oil into useable transportation and energy products. Much of this energy comes from the ground - crude oil, water, natural gas - and is delivered by pipeline. Other energy and materials are brought to the refinery every day by rail and truck.
Every day, over 12 million gallons of crude oil flow down a series of pipelines from Canada and all over the world to the Pine Bend refinery.
More than 800 Flint Hills Resources employees and more than 200 skilled building trade craftsmen and women run the equipment that turns crude oil into gasoline and other transportation fuels and energy products.
Electricity is used to power the refinery, and natural gas, along with some of the crude oil that is turned into fuel gas and fuel oil, is used to heat the crude oil and intermediate streams so that they can be converted into valuable products.
Water is used to wash the crude oil and to cool products and intermediate streams.
Catalysts and other supplies help turn crude oil into fuels. Many other materials, including food for the cafeteria, paper and office supplies, pipe, pumps, valves and other materials, are shipped to the refinery every day so that it can continue to run seven days a week, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
FHR's Pine Bend refinery is like a self-contained city, even though it is located within the cities of Rosemount and Inver Grove Heights, MN. FHR has its own streets and street numbering system, its own water supply and wastewater system, its own electrical substation, and its own fire and security system (although FHR does depend upon local emergency response agencies under a mutual aid agreement).
